1. Many people learn Japanese for business reasons but I'd like to understand the different speech patterns in other forms of conversation. I'd like to know the different ways that people can phrase the same sentence based on age, gender, or situation. With this knowledge, I can better converse in an informal setting.
2.This semester, I hope to learn new phrases that may not necessary sound formal as well as additional grammar patterns and vocabulary.
3.I'd like to do this by reading the manga, Beck, and compiling a list of phrases and words to learn. The series is about music and teenage life so there will not be a great deal of esoteric vocabulary. The series also has two Japanese American characters who are not completely familiar with the Japanese language. There are online retailers that have the Japanese version available.

I think 1, 2, and 3 are related. Just let us know how many grammar patters, phrases, and words you would like to remember per week or per semester.
Please post them on your blog so that we will know what patters, phrases, and words you know. Do not forget to include age, gender, formality if necessarily.
